Quick-Connect Fitting Materials Compared: Brass, Stainless Steel and Aluminum

Published:

Material choice drives everything in a quick-connect fitting: pressure rating, corrosion life, cleanliness, weight and cost. Here is how the three common body materials compare for pneumatic and fluid lines.

Nickel-plated brass (the default for air)

Brass machines cleanly, holds fine threads, and its plating resists normal workshop atmospheres. It is the standard body for general-purpose pneumatic quick-connect fittings — compression strength is ample for the 1.0–1.5 MPa class, and the plating keeps the cosmetic zinc-rot problem away. Choose brass for dry to oily compressed air, water lines up to about 60 °C, and everywhere price per point matters.

Stainless steel 304 / 316 (the default for hostile media)

Austenitic stainless does not rely on a coating: 304 handles humidity and mild chemicals, 316/316L adds molybdenum for chlorides and acids. Stainless keeps its strength at temperature extremes, survives wash-down chemicals, and sheds no plated layer into the line. It costs more and threads are slightly galling-prone — use anti-seize on stainless-to-stainless studs. Choose it for corrosive atmospheres, marine and outdoor plant, food/pharma wash-down zones, and high-purity lines.

Aluminum (the lightweight option)

Aluminum alloys combine low weight with good strength and thermal conductivity, and they machine and form well for complex body shapes. Anodized aluminum fittings appear where weight matters — aerospace fixtures, mobile equipment, robotics — and in larger-diameter bodies where a steel fitting would be heavy. The caveats: bare aluminum dislikes strong alkali and some cleaning chemicals, and threads are softer, so repeated assembly cycles favor a steel or stainless insert.

Quick comparison

Property Plated brass Stainless 304/316 Aluminum
Corrosion resistance Good (plating-dependent) Excellent Fair to good (anodized)
Typical pressure class up to 1.5 MPa up to 2.0 MPa application-specific
Weight Medium Heavy Light
Relative cost Low High Medium
Best for Standard compressed air Corrosion, wash-down, outdoors Mobile and weight-critical builds

Seals and tubes complete the picture — NBR, EPDM or FKM O-rings and nylon/PU tube each move the chemical limits. AFD Pneumatic produces brass, plated, and 304/316 stainless quick-connect bodies; tell us the medium and environment and we will quote the material that fits.
